You can spot colorful toucans soaring through the treetops, monkeys swinging from branch to branch, and elusive jaguars silently prowling through the dense vegetation. The Guatemalan people are friendly and welcoming in nature, with a laid-back lifestyle. Enjoy a place where time slows down, and stress melts away.
Hike around and onto the Volcanoes
Our itinerary spans the Sierra Madre highlands in the southern part of the country. We will visit Antigua, the cultural epicenter of Guatemala, Lake Atitilan, one of the most beautiful lakes in the word, the vibrant city of Quetzeltenango (locally know as Xela), as well as climb 5 of the 37 volcanoes in the country. Hikes on these peaks will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views plus the unforgettable experience of witnessing active volcanic activity right in front of you. We start the hiking Odyssey with a 3 day trek where we will walk through cloud forest canopy, coffee fincas, and Mayan communities. For the trek, we will be staying in a luxurious glamping setup, complete with a private toilet and shower! Other nights will be in local hotels and inns. The culmination of our tour will be a trip to the top of Acatenango for an overnight on the mountain with prime viewing of Fuego – who will likely be spewing red hot lava through the night. We finish with a sunrise from the summit, and a return to Antigua for the completion of our Volcanoes of Guatemala Hiking Odyssey.
Timberline is offering this tour in partnership with Old Town Outfitters Guatemala, who have been operating adventure travel in Guatemala for 25 years. All transportation will be by private shuttle, and a local, bilingual guide will accompany the entire tour. Old Town Outfitters will provide all camping gear necessary for the multi-day trek. Note: camping nights will be 2 people to a tent. Single booking is available for hotel nights. A mid-afternoon meeting time allows for travel to the country same day, and a mid-morning drop off allows a departure on same day. Alternatively, a Guatemala City hotel is suggested for pre and post stays.
