The Oregon Scenic Bikeway program is the first of its kind in the country.  These Bikeways are official state-designated routes with on-road signage, that have been nominated by locals and selected by Oregon State Parks.  The Scenic Bikeway routes highlight the best bike rides in Oregon and showcase beautiful scenery, state history and local communities. They run past state parks on paved paths and roads, cross mountain passes and high deserts.  We have selected the best of the best in the Eugene and Bend area for our new Oregon Scenic Cycling Tour, which include the well known rides on McKenzie Pass and the Crater Lake Rim Road.

Focusing this tour in the Cascade Mountains, we gather in Eugene, Oregon.  This city, at the confluence of the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers, is known for its art museums, green spaces and public markets.  Throughout the week we will rely on shuttles in the Timberline van to get us to the best parts of each route. A highlight is the McKenzie highway, originally built  in the 1870s as a wagon toll road and became an Oregon State Highway in 1925.  The narrow, twisting roadway and high elevation (5,325 feet) made the highway too difficult to maintain and keep clear during the winter months, but the same features makes it a favorite for cyclists after the snow is cleared in the late spring.

Ride the Rim: Crater Lake’s Most Iconic Route

We spend a couple days in the Bend area biking along the Deschutes River and down the Crooked River Canyon on scenic bikeways, before shuttling to our ultimate destination: the impossibly blue-green Crater Lake above 6,000 ft.  With 2 nights at the lodge, we can take our time to explore the entire Rim Road, and all its ups and downs and breathtaking views. Our last day is a fast descent from the Crater as we head north, before taking the Timberline van the rest of the way to Eugene for our tour conclusion.

Please Note: This tour starts with a morning departure for orientation and bike fitting, and an afternoon ride.  We recommend arriving the night before in Eugene.  Because of the rural areas for most of our rides, lunches are included on this tour.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Covered Bridges Loop: Cottage Grove

+

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 32 miles

Elevation Gain: 1,240 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 200 feet

The first day we warm up on our first Scenic Route called Covered Bridges on the Row River Trail along Dorena Lake.  We visit 3 covered bridges while circumnavigating the lake.

Day 2: McKenzie Pass: BelKnap Springs to Sisters

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 37 miles

Elevation Gain: 3,900 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 3,000 feet

We get right to the challenge of the tour today with a morning shuttle to Belknap Springs for our ride up the famous McKenzie Pass. The grade is moderate but steady, and takes you from wet undergrowth, through drier forest, above treeline, then enters lava flow at the top of the pass for a surreal experience.

Day 3: Twin Bridges: Sisters to Bend

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 37 miles

Elevation Gain: 1,735 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 180 feet

We ride from Sisters to Bend today, following the Deschutes River. We jump onto the scenic Twin Bridges route that showcases Central Oregon’s snow-capped Cascade Mountains, as well as high desert terrain and rimrock canyons, and finish with a ride straight to our hotel in the vibrant city of Bend.

Day 4: Crooked River: Bend to Prineville

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 52.4 miles

Elevation Gain: 1,550 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 245 feet

We ride straight from the hotel, or catch a short shuttle to lessen the miles. The route takes us across mostly flat farmland before a small climb to the edge of an ancient caldera. From there we cruise down into the Crooked River Canyon and the Prineville Reservoir. The road slips through the canyon’s towering basalt cliffs, gently curving and descending to the mouth of the canyon. We continue past llama farms and cattle ranches to the small yet vibrant downtown of Prineville. From here we will shuttle up to the famous Crater Lake Lodge.

Day 5: Crater Lake Rim Road

+

Accommodation: Crater Lake Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 33 miles

Elevation Gain: 4,130 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 900 feet

We have an entire day to ride the short, but hilly Rim Road around the entire crater, exploring every curve and overlook.  It is possible to swim in the lake, although it requires a hike that descends 1000 ft to the lake level.

Day 6: Crater Lake downhill to Roseburg

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Distance: 47 miles

Elevation Gain: 1,390 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 500 feet

We retrace the first 6 miles of the Rim Road to the north end, then it is downhill all the way, past Diamond Lake and into the Clearwater River valley on the Umpqua Highway. After dropping 6550 ft we'll meet up at the Medicine Creek area for our final shuttle return to Eugene.
