Prince Edward Island National Park Cycle Tour

“The fairest land ’tis possible to see,” wrote French explorer Jacque Cartier in 1534 when he first landed on the broad sandy beach of Prince Edward Island and gazed upon the island’s brilliant meadows and fertile red soil. Easily the smallest of Canada’s 10 provinces, Prince Edward Island is a cyclist’s paradise. Agriculture is the mainstay of P.E.I.’s economy and the island’s mood is distinctly pastoral and serene. Charlottetown, the provincial capital, is the only town of significant proportion on the island, and is home to about 40%* of the entire province’s population. The agricultural nature of the island also has produced a magnificent network of sparsely-traveled country roads ideally suited for cycling.

The northern portion of the island is renowned for its outstanding beaches, most of which are protected within Prince Edward Island National Park, and their waters are warmed by the currents of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. What P.E.I. lacks in dramatic landscapes, it makes up for in a gentle geography and character that promises the ultimate in a leisurely cycling experience.
