Sun Valley and Sawtooth Mountains Tours

Timberline Adventures began more than 40 years ago with bicycle tours in the American West.  Idaho has always been a go-to place for spectacular mountains, excellent roads and a unique experience.  Over the years we have explored nearly every mile of this expansive state which has all culminated in this itinerary that showcases the best of the rugged Sawtooth mountains and the diversity of recreation opportunities in this area.  The excitement of Sun Valley, the challenge of Galena summit, the vistas in the Sawtooths, the pounding rapids of the Salmon River Valley, the surreal setting of Redfish Lake, and the strange landscapes of Craters of the Moon—this is a Western tour at its best.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive, assemble, bike fitting, orientation dinner

+

Accommodation: Tyrolean Lodge, Ketchum

Our Sun Valley Multisport Tour assembles in Boise, ID for an evening of dinner and orientation.

Day 2: Van transfer to Highway 75, bike to Sun Valley (Ketchum), explore town and ski area

+

Accommodation: Tyrolean Lodge, Ketchum

Distance: 26 miles

On Day 2, after a car shuttle to the community of Stanton Crossing, we will warm up our legs on the gentle climb, primarily on a bike path, up to the resort town of Ketchum at the base of Sun Valley ski area. We’ll spend three nights at the Tyrolean Lodge, with its inviting outdoor pool and hot tub.

Day 3: Hike Pioneer Cabin Loop

+

Accommodation: Tyrolean Lodge, Ketchum

Distance: 8.5 miles

Day 3 we can enjoy the beauty of the surrounding mountains with a loop hike to Pioneer Cabin. This is a local’s favorite hike, and we’ll easily loose the crowds of the town as we climb 2500 feet over 3.6 miles to a cabin maintained by the US Forest Service. The trail combines fields of wildflowers with incredible mountain views as it crests a ridge on its way back to the trail head. Upon our return there will be plenty of time to explore the culture of Sun Valley.

Day 4: Van transfer to Craters of the Moon, hike to North Crater, Wilderness Trail, cave trails, return to Sun Valley

+

Accommodation: Redfish Lake Lodge

Distance: 8 miles

Day 4 will start with a van shuttle to the other worldly land of Craters of the Moon National Monument. You will feel like you have been transported in a sci-fi film as you explore craters, buttes, cinder cones, caves and lava flows. We will take a series of shorter hikes to explore the incredible variety in this area.

Day 5: Sun Valley - Galena Summit - Stanley

+

Accommodation: Redfish Lake Lodge

Distance: 64 miles

We return to our bicycles on Day 5 for a spectacular climb along the Wood River to the Galena Summit (8,701 feet), and then a descent through the headwaters of the Salmon River to the coveted resort of Redfish Lake Lodge, at the base of Redfish Lake deep in the Sawtooth Mountains. We’ll spend two nights in the area, enjoying the views of the surrounding three mountain ranges looming above.

Day 6: Rafting on the Salmon River

+

Accommodation: Redfish Lake Lodge

A trip to the Salmon River Valley would not be complete without a raft trip on its exciting waters. For Day 6 you can choose between a gentle float and a heart pounding Class III High Adventure trip. Either choice is sure to instill a sense of awe for this wild river.

Day 7: Stanley – Banner Summit - Payette Canyon - Lowman

+

Accommodation: Redfish Lake Lodge

Distance: 65 miles

Day 7 it’s back on the bikes to ride to Banner Summit and on into the rugged wilderness setting of Payette Canyon along the wild Middle Fork of the Payette River. The miles will quickly fade behind you on this mostly downhill ride. We’ll spend a final night in Lowman at the quaint Sourdough Lodge.

Day 8: Lowman - Garden Valley - Banks; van shuttle to Boise

+

Distance: 35 miles

Our final ride continues down the Payette on Day 8 past hotsprings, camping and rural communities, to the town of Banks. Here the traffic picks up, so we will van shuttle back to Boise where our adventure concludes.
