Our next International Hiking Odyssey will take us south to the country of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a lush Central American democracy renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, eco-tourism and commitment to peace.  Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and Carribean Sea, it is famous for its thriving rain forests, active volcanoes and the cultural philosophy of pura vida.

This signature journey may look a little different, as the culture in the country does not encourage long hikes in the wilderness. By living with pura vida, the people want to exist in harmony with the environment, enjoy the benefits of the land without trying to overpower nature, and just let things be. The country has become aware of the value that their beautiful country holds, and has started to look for ways to profit from the land. For that reason, the places that have become more accessible are also becoming more crowded. The national parks are rightly expecting visitors to help pay for the maintenance of the areas through entrance fees. And the amenities to support the growing tourism are priced to match the economies of the tourists, more closely than nearby 3rd world country economies. In this tour, we strive to find a combination of nature exploration, examining the local businesses and their people, visiting popular natural features, participate in a variety of enjoyable activities, and just plain relaxing in a tropical environment.

We’ll hear unique stories and insights about the area as we paddle peacefully through the mangrove forest. Later in the day we continue south to the Nauyaca Waterfall, that some consider the most beautiful in the country. Our 4 mile hike will take us to the base of the waterfall for a refreshing swim and copious photos. Tonight we settle into our cottages in Uvita, our home for the next 2 nights.

The beauty of this trail is you can climb as much or as little as you like. When you have had your fill, simply return via the same route back to the river.
