Grand Canyon National Park Rim to Rim Hiking Tour

The Grand Canyon is such an unbelievable place and geological phenomenon, and we truly believe that, if you’re a hiker to the core, at some time in your life you need to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.  For this trip we will experience of this popular National Park from top to bottom in only four days. We’ll take one warm up hike from the south rim, then take the spectacular descent from the south rim to the bottom of the canyon and the do or die ascent back up to the north rim.    Come prepared for the challenging and breathtaking descent into the Grand Canyon, from the ponderosa forests at the rim through the layers of Kaibab limestone, Coconino sandstone and hermit shale to the Colorado at the base of the Canyon. The variety within the Canyon is overwhelming. The land forms, the colors, the spectacular vistas, that first sighting of the Colorado – every switchback along the trail is its own visual and sensual adventure.

The Accommodations:

To complement the grand experience, we stay in historic lodges.  At the south rim, we stay in the newly renovated Maswik lodge, with its convenient location near the rim in the middle of Grand Canyon Village. We move to the only lodging below the rim of Grand Canyon at Phantom Ranch, whose main lodge and rustic cabins were built in the 1920’s.  Sadly, the Grand Canyon Lodge on the north rim burned down in July of 2025. The nearby historic Jacob Lake Inn is perfect replacement for a rest after our long ascent. Our final day we return to Flagstaff past the Vemillion cliffs, through Marble Canyon where the California Condor fly, with a stop at the Cameron Trading Post for some native flavor, and back to the airport for a quick return to reality.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Group assembles in Flagstaff, transfer to the south rim, hike to 3 Mile rest house.

+

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 6.5 miles

Elevation Gain: 2,140 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 2,000 feet

We get a preview of the canyon with a below the rim hike on the Bright Angel Trail, down to 3 mile rest house. It may seem short on the way down, but you will use 3 times the energy for the return to the rim.

Day 2: Hike into the Canyon on South Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River, overnight at Phantom Ranch

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DInner

Distance: 7.3 miles

Elevation Gain: 110 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 100 feet

We’ll want an early start for our descent into the canyon along the South Kaibab Trail. Escaping the crowds and enjoying the cool morning air for the spectacular descent is our goal. We’ll descend from the ponderosa forests at the rim through the layers of Kaibab limestone, Coconino sandstone and hermit shale to the Colorado at the base of the Canyon. Overall we descend almost 5000 ft. The variety within the Canyon is overwhelming. The land forms, the colors, the spectacular vistas, that first sighting of the Colorado – every switchback along the trail is its own visual and sensual adventure. Our lodging at Phantom Ranch will be in multi-bed cabins. Unfortunately we cannot offer a choice of beds as our bed assignment is provided from a lottery and we take what they can give us. Toilets are in each lodging unit, and the well stocked showers are located in a separate, single sex building.

Day 3: Hike to the North Rim, on the North Kaibab Trail, overnight at Kaibab Lodge

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DInner

Distance: 14.3 miles

Elevation Gain: 6,215 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 4,270 feet

Another early morning start is necessary on our climbing day, where we’ll venture into the North Canyon and eventually climb up the North Kaibab Trail to the North Rim. Along the way we get spectacular views as we ascend to the rim. We stay in the quaint Jacob Lake Inn in the nearest community to the North Rim. Pat yourself on the back for completing this truly challenging hike.

Day 4: Return to Flagstaff via Marble Canyon and Cameron Trading Post. Optional hike to Cathedral slot canyon

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Distance: 3 miles

Elevation Gain: 350 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 150 feet

Our shuttle around the canyon and back south to Flagstaff includes more spectacular scenery. We pass the Vermillion Cliffs shining in the morning sun. We stop at the bridge of Marble Canyon, next to the Navajo Bridge, where we can watch California Condors swooping into the canyon. There is an optional hike down into Cathedral slot canyon, for a last Grand Canyon experience. The wash has a great variety of features including steps, benches, small pools and dryfalls. We stop for a snackat the Cameron Trading Post for a taste of the native culture before our eventual return to Flagstaff. Feel free to book flights out of Flagstaff late that day if you can’t wait to get back to the office – but we’re guessing you won’t want this once-in-a-lifetime tour of the Grand Canyon to end.
