Our circumnavigation of the island begins on Day 1 as we head south from Kailua-Kona to Milolii for a coastal hike to warm up our legs. We then drive through the National Park for a safe look at the Kilauea Volcano, to our hotel in Volcano. Day 2 will depend on last minute conditions for a tour on the southern end of the island. Rangers continue to rebuild and reopen new terrain, so we may be lucky enough to experience a just opened trail in the park! Day 3 will focus on the eastern shores with a hike from Punalu’u to Kawa for a stop at a pure black sand beach that is popular with sea turtles. From there we continue north with time to make some short hikes to amazing waterfalls, before continuing to our resort home for the next two nights. Day 4 brings us to the northern end of the island and a hike a Waipio Valley. A steep descent from the trail head leads to the valley floor and we’ll spend the day exploring this magnificent area visiting black sand beaches and waterfalls. On Day 5 we return to the west side for a hike on the Captain Cook Trail that includes an awesome 1400 foot descent to the the pounding surf below. We’ll have time to hang on the beautiful black sand beach that offers some of the best snorkeling on the island. After this leisurely afternoon we return to Kilauea-Kona for the conclusion of the Big Island tour.
