Yellowstone became our country’s first national park in 1872, and is known for its wildlife and its many otherworldly geothermal features. Right next door is the majestic Grand Teton National Park with its towering peaks and reflective lakes.  We at Timberline have been enjoying these crown jewels of our national parks since our earliest days and can’t wait to continue to show off the beauty. We have created an all new shortened Yellowstone and Grand Teton tour with easier hikes to introduce guests to the area.  We will visit the Mammoth area with its travertine terraces, we will look down into the depths of Yellowstone Canyon and will stay by the shores of the great Yellowstone Lake. Of course we will see Old Faithful, and other geyser basins, bubbling mud pots and fumaroles.  And we will take you into the heart of the Tetons for a boat ride across Jenny Lake and a chance to explore Cascade Canyon to Inspiration Point.

We stay in the iconic lodges of the parks – right in the heart of the beauty.  Old Faithful LodgeLake Yellowstone and Jackson Lake Lodge!!  Although pricey, these cabins and lodges give you the unique feel of the history of our oldest national parks and the amazing gift that preserving this land for all has been. Come join our Yellowstone and Grand Teton tour with us!

ITINERARY

Day 1: Assemble in Bozeman and van shuttle to Mammoth Hot Springs; hike Beaver Ponds, explore Hot Springs and North Geyser Basin. Overnight at Old Faithful Inn

+

Accommodation: Old Faithful Lodge

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 5.4 miles

Elevation Gain: 760 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 160 feet

Our hiking tour assembles in Bozeman, MT early morning of Day 1, and we’ll van shuttle to the Mammoth area. Our first hike is a rolling 5 mile loop through Beaver Ponds that will bring us to the Hot Springs area. This is Yellowstone’s only major thermal area located well outside the Yellowstone Caldera. Here you can observe the travertine terraces, which are changing constantly, along with other active thermal features. We will then continue our journey south, with a stop at Norris Geyser Basin, the hottest thermal area in the park. Cabins in the historic Old Faithful area will be our home for 2 nights.

Day 2: Explore Upper Geyser Basin, Lower Geyser Basin on the Firehole River, Paint Pot Trail, Firehole Falls, and Fairy Falls. Overnight at Old Faithful Inn

+

Accommodation: Old Faithful Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 6.7 miles

Elevation Gain: 370 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 100 feet

Day 2 will be an exploration of the Old Faithful area. We’ll visit multiple geyser basins, the Firehole River, waterfalls, bubbling calderas and other thermal features along short paths and boardwalks.

Day 3: Climb Mt. Washburn (10,223 ft), view Yellowstone Canyon, overnight at Lake Hotel Cabins

+

Accommodation: Lake Hotel Cabins

Distance: 7 miles

Elevation Gain: 1,400 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 1,050 feet

On Day 3, we offer a challenge to summit Mount Washburn – the highest point of the Washburn Range. Just over 3 miles of walking to the top will give us far reaching views of the giant Yellowstone Caldera and surrounding mountains. We then continue our clockwise drive around the Yellowstone loop to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Here we can visit Upper and Lower Falls on short trails from the parking lot. This relatively new canyon, geologically speaking, has been carved through fault lines and glacial deposits by the Yellowstone River, the longest undammed river in the continental United States. We then continue through the Hayden Valley to Lake Village for our overnight in the quaint cabins near Yellowstone Lake.

Day 4: Hike Natural Bridge Trail or Elephant Back Mountain Trail. Overnight at Jackson Lake Lodge

+

Accommodation: Jackson Lake Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 6.4 miles

Elevation Gain: 1,000 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 450 feet

Day 4 is a choice of two hikes. A gentle hike up Bridge Creek takes us to see where the waters have carved a small natural bridge on which grows a lone pine tree. The nearby trail up Elephant Back Mountain takes us to one of the best elevated viewpoints of Yellowstone Lake. The trees open out as the path approaches the rim of a plateau, allowing a great vista over the northern part of the lake and the rugged Absaroka Range to the east. We then continue our drive through West Thumb and along the John D Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway into Grand Teton National Park, to the historic Jackson Lake Lodge for the night.

Day 5: Shuttle to Jenny Lake, self-exploration up to Inspiration Point, exit park to Jackson, WY

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Distance: 3 miles

Elevation Gain: 500 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 275 feet

In the midst of the majestic Teton Mountains we are surrounded by natural beauty captured in the paintings and photos of so many before us, and too many choices of where to scout. Our quick introduction of the area will take us on Day 5 to Jenny Lake where a small ferry takes guests to the west side for a walk on the newly designed trail up to Inspiration Point. You will be given ample time to explore the area – walking up Cascade Canyon, or around the lake, or finding a quiet spot to contemplate the vast wilderness. Our tour ends with a shuttle into Jackson, Wyoming, and no doubt a yearn to return for another dose of nature therapy.
