Vail, Colorado is known for its world class skiing, regularly playing host to both professional ski races and happy ski tourists. But the lesser known side of Vail are the excellent high altitude cycling paths. Communities in the Vail Valley have invested in wonderful facilities for cyclists. The centerpiece of this investment is the fully paved Vail Pass bike path that connects the multiple ski villages along the Front Range, creating a safe route for cyclists to enjoy the climbs, descents and views along the way, all the way from Silverthorne into Glenwood Springs. For this light version of our 3 day getaway, we will stay on the paved paths and ride only the downhills, making the experience of cycling in the Colorado Rockies accessible to all. Our hotel base will be in the town of Vail, with plenty of time to enjoy this European style town. All the details have been taken care of for you, including bicycle rental.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Vail Pass to Vail

+

Meals: Snacks, Dinner

Distance: 16 miles

Elevation Gain: 180 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 50 feet

On Day 1 of our weekend getaway we will meet in Denver and shuttle through Summit County to the top of Vail Pass. Here you will jump on your bicycle for the thrilling ride down into the glitzy town of Vail. You can spend some time enjoying cycling the paths in Vail, or head right to your accommodations for relaxation. We recommend lodging in the European style village of Vail, where you can walk the brick lined streets to stores, ice cream shops and galleries.

Day 2: Dotsero to Glenwood Springs; hot springs pool

+

Meals: Breakfast, snacks, Dinner

Distance: 20 miles

Elevation Gain: 640 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 50 feet

Day 2 starts with a shuttle through the entire Vail Valley and on down along the Eagle River to Dotsero – named for the mile marker (dot zero) of the famed Dotsero Cutoff that connected the rail road route west out of Denver through the Moffet Tunnel, to the Denver & Rio Grande line that continued to the west coast. We take advantage of the Glenwood Canyon Bike Path that follows the Colorado River through the narrow and scenic Glenwood Canyon. You share the gorge-like canyon with the river and I-70, where you can marvel at the engineering genius required to create a major transportation passage through the canyon. At the end of the route is the opportunity to soak in the natural waters of the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool at Glenwood Hot Springs, before the van shuttle return to Vail.

Day 3: Copper Mountain to Silverthorne

+

Meals: Breakfast, snacks

Distance: 15 miles

Elevation Gain: 225 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 50 feet

The van will give you the boost over Vail Pass as we head back east to the world class Copper Mountain Ski Area. Here we begin our cycling on the TenMile Cycling path. We head down to the community of Frisco, a community that sits in the middle of nature’s playgrounds, with statuesque peaks topping out above 14,000 feet, bold rivers with renowned rapids and fishing holes; and hundreds of miles of wilderness. The path then winds along Dillon Reservoir, across the dam and into the sister community of Silverthorne. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenes in Summit County with restaurants, shopping and lakeside diversion like fishing and boating. Late afternoon we will load up the bikes and head back to Denver for the conclusion of our getaway.
