Outer Banks Detailed Itinerary

Back to Tour Page

Our grand adventure assembles in Elizabeth City mid-afternoon with ample time to explore this intriguing town prior to our orientation dinner.

On Day 2, we will ride the bike friendly roads to Currituck Sound where we head south to Point Harbor and the bridge to the Outer Banks. Along the way, we will visit Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brother’s National Monument.

Day 3 Bask in the immense expanse of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore as we enter the Outer Banks proper traveling south. Our ride will be bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by Pamlico Sound. Our trail takes us southward through Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge with more than 5,000 acres of marsh. We’ll continue into the network of lighthouses and life saving stations which served these waters known as “The Graveyard of the Atlantic”. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the most famous of these having just survived its move away from a deteriorating shoreline.

Next up on Day 4 we will complete our exploration of the island before taking a ferry to Orcacoke Island. You can unpack your bags because we stay at our inn for two nights.

On Day 5, After a wonderful breakfast, your day is free to explore the miles of shoreline. Comb the beach for shells, Kayak the calm waters or stop by the town of Orcacoke to explore the shops, local lighthouse or maybe cycle the town’s small side roads.

We are off again on Day 6, after an early morning ferry from Ocracoke to Cedar Island, we’ll cycle through Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge – home to thousands of ducks and birds.  We continue through the small, shoreside communities, then cross the vast North River, and Newport River waterways.  From Moorehead City we cross the Atlantic Beach Bridge back onto a barrier island, to our hotel in Atlantic Beach for a last night near the ocean.

On our last Day 7 of biking, we head down Bogue Banks Island to Lands End before doubling back to Emerald Isle. This last cruise down the Crystal Coast will leave the salt in your hair and a smile on your face.  While the feeling lingers, we will shuttle you south to Wilmington for the conclusion of our Outer Banks Cycling Tour.
