Beartooth Mountains Hiking Tour Detailed Itinerary

Back to Tour Page

Our hiking tour will assemble in Red Lodge, eastern gateway to the Beartooths, mid-morning on Day 1 and we’ll provide a van shuttle from Billings. We’ll hike on the Stillwater River Trail where we will walk past flower-filled meadows and towering boulders worthy of a climb, before reaching Sioux Charley Lake.  This will be a great introduction to the beauty of the Beartooth Mountains and the role water has played in shaping the scenery.  We then head for Rock Creek Resort, where we’ll spend all 5 nights.

On Day 2, we’ll shuttle along the West Fork of Rock Creek for an engaging 9-mile introduction to the wilderness as we hike to Timberline Lake. The views from the lake are magnificent, including Timberline Glacier and 12,500′ Silver Run Peak.

Early morning of Day 3 we head to the Lake Fork of Rock Creek which offers beautiful waterfalls, gorgeous scenery, and abundant wildlife.  We are headed to the pristine mountain lake of Lost Lake where we should have time to sit back and enjoy the magnificent scenery.

Day 4, we’re hiking to Beartooth Butte and a spectacular encounter with Beartooth High Lakes. Much of this 9-mile hike in the Beartooth high country is at or above timberline with breathtaking views of countless high alpine lakes and the dominating presence of Lonesome Mountain and famous Beartooth Butte. Today’s hike will include a drive over Beartooth Pass on the famous Beartooth Highway.

On Day 5, we’ll climb moderately along the cascading West Fork of Rock Creek to beautiful Quinnebaugh Meadows, passing Calamity and Sentinel Falls along the way (10 miles).

Our final hike on Day 6, will be from the West Rosebud Trailhead as we explore the trail to Mystic Lake.  If you still have not had enough, there is the option to continue a bit further into the wilderness towards Island Lake.  After the hike we return to Billings. The Beartooth Mountains Hiking tour is one not to miss!
