Grand Canyon Group Hiking Tour

The Grand Canyon is such an unbelievable place and geological phenomenon, and a bucket list item for those who truly love hiking is a trip to the bottom of the canyon. An early spring hike avoids the crowds and heat of summer.  The bottom of the canyon stays warm year round, but at the south rim, with an elevation of 7,000 feet, we may encounter some freezing temperatures.  As prepared hikers, we can enjoy the vast variety of the canyon as we descend from the ponderosa forests at the rim through the layers of Kaibab limestone, Coconino sandstone and hermit shale to the Colorado at the base of the Canyon. The variety within the Canyon is overwhelming. The land forms, the colors, the spectacular vistas, that first sighting of the Colorado.  Every one of the 40 switchbacks along the trail offers its own visual and sensual adventure.

Our mini tour aims to get you to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in minimal time.  You are picked up from Flagstaff and whisked to the south rim of the canyon – the major hub for canyon visitors.  There will be time in the afternoon to stretch your legs and explore the many trails on the mesa.  The next day we get right to it as we hike to the bottom of the canyon to meet the Colorado River via the South Kaibab Trail.  A night at the bottom, in the historic Phantom Ranch is our reward – and our preparation, as next day we must regain all our altitude.  Because of construction of a new water pipe system, our return the next day will again be on the South Kaibab Trail. With the upward perspective we will see all new views. After a celebration dinner at the famous El Tovar, we have time on the last morning to take in all the rim has to offer – the Trail of Time, museums and historic buildings, and even a sunrise hike to capture the magic of the sun’s rays as they penetrate the schism of time itself.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Group assembles in Flagstaff, van shuttle to South Rim, hike the West Rim Trail

+

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 5 miles

Elevation Gain: 645 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 100 feet

We’ll meet in Flagstaff and take a morning transfer to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We'll take a warm up hike on the West Rim Trail, and dip below the rim for a small section, as you get used to the grandeur of this canyon. We stay in lodging near the rim as we prepare for our big hike down next day.

Day 2: Early morning departure South Kaibab Trail: (4800-foot descent); overnight lodging at Phantom Ranch

+

Accommodation: Phantom Ranch cabin

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 7.3 miles

Elevation Gain: 112 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 100 feet

We’ll want a very early start on today for our descent into the canyon along the South Kaibab Trail. We’ll descend from the ponderosa forests at the rim through the layers of Kaibab limestone, Coconino sandstone and hermit shale to the Colorado at the base of the Canyon. The variety within the Canyon is overwhelming. The land forms, the colors, the spectacular vistas, that first sighting of the Colorado – every switchback along the trail is its own visual and sensual adventure. Our lodging at Phantom Ranch will be in a 10 person cabin. Unfortunately we cannot offer a choice of beds as our bed assignment is provided from a lottery and we take what they can give us. Toilets are in each lodging unit, and the well stocked showers are located in a separate, single sex building.

Day 3: Hike up the South Kaibab Trail (4800 ft ascent), overnight on the South Rim

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 9.8 miles

Elevation Gain: 4,665 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 3,300 feet

We'll want another early morning start, as we’ll climb from the canyon all the way up back to the south rim. As access to the Bright Angel Trail is still closed, we will return via the South Kaibab Trail. We’ll celebrate with dinner at El Tovar that evening, a Timberline Adventures tradition, and spend the night at the South Rim.

Day 4: Hike the Trail of Time, extending on the West Rim Trail; return to Flagstaff

+

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Distance: 2.7 miles

Elevation Gain: 39 feet

Largest Single Elevation Gain: 10 feet

We have one last morning to reflect on our journey through time on the aptly named Trail of Time. Information signs along this rim hike will explain the million year history of the canyon.
