“Sunny days, rainy days, enjoying the beauty and fun of the latest National Park New River Gorge with Timberline is an experience I will cherish.”  R.H.

New River Gorge National Park

Established in December, 2020, New River Gorge is the newest national park in the country.  The canyon is the deepest river gorge east of the Mississippi River, and features some of the country’s best whitewater rafting. Smaller noncontiguous sections showcase the ghost town of Thurmond, the coal mining scene of Nuttalberg, the scenic Grandview vista, and Sandstone Falls. The forest contains the most diverse flora of any river gorge in the south and central Appalachian Mountains.  History comes alive in the rail yards at Quinnimont, where coal was first shipped from the gorge, and the piers of an old bridge which once connected the timber towns of Hamlet and Glade.  Signs of the railroad that brought life to the area in 1870 are found throughout the gorge, and Amtrak’s Cardinal passenger line still operates today.

Our Multi-sport Tour

The New River is a misnomer, being recognized as the second oldest river in the world. But the national park is the newest in our country, and there are so many activities to choose from, we couldn’t make the choice. It is a perfect place for our growing list of multisport tours. The park is divided into distinct areas, each with its own character. We will enjoy hiking on many of the trails to view the natural beauty and the signs of historic eras that create our nation’s past. We will take to 2 wheels to enjoy the forested trails through the high mesas and into the river gorges. Note: The cycling is mountain biking, and appropriate bikes are provided.  Alternative activities may be available for those who do not wish to bike.  No visit to the New River Gorge is complete without an up-close encounter with the river itself. We offer two options of river rafting – a gentle and scenic float through the upper gorge, or an exciting, white-water trip through the rapids of the lower New River Gorge. Each night we retire to our comfortable hotel and dine on regional cuisine to fuel up for the next day.  Come join us in the New River Gorge.
