The Grand Canyon is such an unbelievable place and geological phenomenon, and we truly believe that, if you’re a hiker to the core, at some time in your life you need to hike the Grand Canyon from rim-to-river-to-rim. With a fall hike, we may encounter snow on the north rim – a stark contrast to the trapped heat we will feel at the bottom. We’ll descend from the ponderosa forests at the rim through the layers of Kaibab limestone, Coconino sandstone and hermit shale to the Colorado at the base of the Canyon. The variety within the Canyon is overwhelming. The land forms, the colors, the spectacular vistas, that first sighting of the Colorado – every switchback along the trail is its own visual and sensual adventure.
We’ll meet in Flagstaff and van shuttle to the North Rim early morning of Day 1. We’ll stop and look for California Condors on the way and have a picnic lunch with a stop at Jacob Lake for the best cookies on the planet. We’ll continue to the North Rim for a little exploring and dinner.
Following an overnight on the rim, we’ll descend on Day 2 into the canyon along the North Kaibab Trail to the canyon bottom and spend the night at Phantom Ranch. Our lodging at Phantom Ranch will be in 4 – 10 person cabins, or single sex dormitories. Unfortunately we cannot offer a choice of beds as our bed assignment is provided from a lottery and we take what they can give us. Toilets are in each lodging unit, and the well stocked showers are located in a separate, single sex building.
Day 3 is one of choice – a layover day, a chance to enjoy Phantom Ranch, hike, relax and read – your pleasure.
With an early morning start on Day 4, we’ll climb from the canyon along the Bright Angel Trial. We’ll celebrate dinner at El Tovar that evening, a Timberline Adventures tradition, and spend the night at South Rim.
On Day 5, we’ll start with an early morning transfer to Sedona, then hike Munds Wagon Trail from the Schnebly Hill Trailhead above Sedona through Bear Wallow Canyon toward Munds Mountain on the high-country plateau of the Mogollon Rim. This trail showcases several of Sedona’s most spectacular red rock formations. We’ll hike to the Merry-Go-Round and explore a portion of the Cowpies Trail on our return. Our overnight will be in the quaint winter retreat of Sedona, where you can explore local coffee shops and galleries.
We’ll head to the village of Oak Creek on our final day to hike one of the area’s classics – the loop encircling massive Bell Rock and the Courthouse Formation. After a lunch stop we’ll fit in one more exploration into Oak Creek Canyon and hike along the West Fork of Oak Creek, renowned for its diverse biological community and the rugged beauty of its soaring sandstone walls rising from the canyon floor. From there is it a short hop back to Flagstaff for the conclusion of the tour.
